PAL (Propeller Axis Offset) is defined as the perpendicular distance between the power input flange centerline and the propeller centerline.
The power transmission capacity of azimuth thrusters depends on their maximum input torque. Actual operational torque may be affected by:
Thruster configuration
Prime mover type
Vessel characteristics
Consult our technical team before selecting thruster models.
Prime Mover Torque Specification
The prime mover's (typically diesel engine, hydraulic motor, or electric motor) rated output torque (Mp) is critical for proper thruster selection:
Formula:
Mp ≤ Sf × MR
Where:
Mp: Prime mover output torque (Nm)
Sf: Safety factor (Sf = fz × fl × fo × fs)
MR: Thruster rated input torque (Nm)
N: Prime mover output power (kW)
n: Thruster input speed (rpm)
Safety Factor Considerations
Each thruster model has specific allowable design torque values. Based on our decades of experience:
These values cannot be the sole selection criteria
All operational conditions must be thoroughly evaluated
Standard safety factor (Sf) requirements:
Cagon thrusters meet classification society standards for normal navigation
Ice-class thrusters require Sf between 0.33-0.67
Special installation applications must be approved by Cagon Marine technical team
